Planet of the Vampires

original title: Terrore nello spazio

Comparison:

  • US Version
  • Italian Version
Release: Feb 26, 2017 - Author: brainbug1602 - Translator: Tony Montana - external link: IMDB
Compared are the US Version (German DVD by Legend) and the Italian Version (Italian DVD by iiF).

During a flight in space, Capt. Mark Markary receives some weird signal from a planet nearby. When the Galliot, another spaceship, follows up on it, the ship just vanishes into thin air. Mark decides to land on the planet in order to help the crew from the Galliot but when he arrives there, he finds their bodies. It looks like the crew members killed each other. Mysterious lights, disappearing bodies and a further ship filled with skeletons of unknown creatures raise further questions.

Mario Bava's Planet of the Vampires is somewhere between cult and trash. Waggling settings and simple logic meet a story ahead of its time. There are similarities to classics such as Alien as well. Considering the very low budget, the result is quite astonishing.

There are two versions of Planet of the Vampires: The original Italian Version and an edited version for the US market. The most noticeable differences are the altered opening and end credits. While the Italian Version contains white credits on a black background, the US Version contains further space footage. Another difference is Mark's conversation with the parasites which is longer in the Italian Version and so is Toby's death. Other than that, the differences are rather marginal. If I had to pick one, I would probably recommend the Italian Version because the longer dialogs are more valuable than some spacec footage during the credits.
