Comparison between the international TV Version taken from the FX broadcast from September 28th 2008 and the uncensored Original Version taken from the US DVD by Sony Pictures
* 15x alternative footage
* 3 recuts
* 2 audio track alterations
Difference in running time: 598,1 sec (= 9:58 min)
The pilot for the great series about a high school teacher who becomes a meth cook is interesting for us due to two reasons.
On the one hand, it is about 10 minutes longer than all other episodes, at least in the original version. However, it was shortened for the international broadcasts to have the same length as the other episodes, as was the case with The Walking Dead, for example. These cuts concerned the plot of the episode. Additionally, there is also a lot of alternative or completely new footage. This altered version could be seen e.g. on the UK channel FX.
There is also an altered version of the original cut, which features a few censorings like blurred breasts and muted swearings. This version was shown on AMC, where the episodes always can be seen first. However, only one month later IFC showed the same episode "Uncut & Uncensored" to the US audience.
All DVD and Blu-ray editions of the series only feature the uncensored original version.
Taking all into consideration, this is what can be said about the pilot:
1. Original Version
a) Uncensored: 58 min NTSC/Blu-ray and 56 min PAL/DVD
b) Censored AMC Version: 57 min NTSC
2. International TV Version: 46 min PAL
In the international TV version, many instances of additional footage seem quite strange. Some of it was only inserted for better scene transitions, other moments, like Jesse's flight and his girlfriend throwing his stuff out of the window, is quite remarkable. AMC blurred her naked breasts, whereas the international audience saw an alternative take in which she was wearing a bra. The plot cuts are not important in order to understand the series, but those many calm and meaningful scenes tell a lot about the characters and are an important key for the success of the series. Therefore it is a pity if they are left out.
The two audio track alterations seem weird as well, especially because the "fuck"s, which can be considered worse and were muted in the AMC version, have been left untouched.
Running time designations are formatted like this:
FX broadcast (International TV Version) in PAL / US DVD in NTSC
03:55-04:01 / 04:07-05:13
Just after the intro, the first scene is missing. Walter is lying in his bed in the early morning of his birthday and then uses his stepper without much motivation. The international version features a different transition to the next scene.
Uncensored Original Version
The house can be seen from the outside at night, a text overlay states that the time is three weeks before the things happening in the intro.
Skyler is sleeping, Walter is lying awake next to her. The alarm clock displays 5:02, he gets up and on the stepper. From there, he looks at an award from 1985 and then briefly looks down on the device.
International TV Version
The house can be seen in full daylight from outside, the text overlay is the same.
Uncensored Original Version 59,6 sec longer
This alteration also effects the credit overlays, which will not be discussed here.
05:08 / 06:23
Walter insignificantly longer.
05:09 / 06:24-06:29
A few frames more of Skyler, then Walter jr continues to complain about the vegetarian ham.
Walter jr: "Not me. I want real bacon. Not this fake crap."
Skyler: "Too bad. Eat it."
Alternative Footage / Recut
05:12-05:14 / 06:32-06:29
In the international version, the previously removed shot was inserted here (for pictures cf. Above).
The Uncensored Original Version, however, shows another shot of her telling him to "Eat it!"
Uncensored Original Version 0,3 sec longer
05:36 / 06:57-07:32
Walter gets out of the car and takes a bag from the back seat.
He talks to his junior, who is getting out of the car as well: "You all set?"
Walter jr: "Yeah, I'm fine."
Walter: "All right, see you at home."
Walter jr: "Okay, see you."
Walter goes to school.
The scene in class starts earlier.
Walter: "Chemistry. It is the study of what? Anyone? Ben."
The student, looking rather clueless: "Chemicals."
Walter: "Chemicals... No!"
05:40-05:41 / 07:36-07:37
The international version shows Walter longer in a longshot; in the original version, the following shot starts the exact time earlier.
No difference in time
06:58 / 08:58-09:05
Another shot of Walter, probably in the school's computer room.
07:02 / 09:09-09:12
The exterior shot of the car wash insignificantly longer, then Walter inside earlier at the cash register: "And 2, 3 makes 10, and 10 makes 20."
07:55-08:03 / 10:08-10:40
The international TV version shows Walter 2 sec longer washing the tires of the car. Then the scene is over and he can be seen arriving at home.
The original version changes to another perspective and Walter notices someone is watching.
"Hey, Mr. White!"
Class clown Chad can be seen taking a picture; "Make those tires shine, huh?"
Chad's girlfriend is at the phone: "Oh, my God. You would not believe who's cleaning Chad's car. Mr. White...from Chemistry."
Walter lets his head down and keeps on washing.
He then drives home, but in different shots showing only the interior of the car. He takes the sign for disabled people from the rear mirror and puts it into the glove compartment, which does not want to open at first.
Uncensored Original Version 24,2 sec longer
09:08 / 11:48
Walter insignificantly longer.
10:46 / 13:30-16:07
After the birthday Party, a scene is missing in which Walter enters the bedroom. Skyler satisfies him with her hand, but he almost does not react. This is probably due to the fact that she is mostly concerned with the result of an online auction, which she follows with her laptop at the same time.
Walter asks about the auction: "Which one's this?"
Skyler: "That faux-Lalique vase I picked up at the Super-Swap."
Walter: "How's it doing?"
Skyler: "I met my reserve, and there's still two minutes."
She puts her hand under the blanket, Walter is confused: "What's up?"
Skyler, slowly moving her hand: "You tell me, birthday boy... Oh, hey, so what's up for Saturday?"
Walter: "Car wash. Bogdan says he needs me."
Skyler: "Until what time? Noon? 1-ish?"
Walter: "Probably 2, more like it."
Skyler: "And then what after that?"
Walter: "Actually... I was thinking of driving up to Los Alamos. The visitor center has an exhibit on... It's really supposed to be..."
Skyler: "You're not gonna paint?"
Walter: "I'll paint. It's just that this...part of this exhibition on the...Mars Rover photographs are... The detail really is just supposed to be amazing."
Skyler pocht auf die Hausarbeit: "It's just that I really need you to paint at some point. I mean, the sooner that back bedroom gets finished. And I'd do it myself, except you said you don't want me standing on the stepladder."
Walter: "I'll paint. I will paint."
Skyler is becoming impatient because her work under the blanket does not lead to anything: "What is going on down there?"
Walter: "No, it's just..."
Skyler: "Is he asleep?"
Walter: "No, It's nothing. You know, just... You know, we gotta be careful about the baby."
Skyler: "Don't worry about the baby. This is just for you. We are just doing you tonight. So just close your eyes. Relax, and let it... Close your eyes."
Walter follows the order: "Okay."
Skyler: "There you go. That's it. That's it. There you go. Keep it going. Keep it going. Keep it going. Keep... Yes!"
The euphoric scream seems a bit weird to Walter and he just realizes the reason for it when looking sideways. She is happy about her auction: "56!"
11:24-11:27 / 16:47-17:54
The international TV version shows Walter 2 seconds longer on the ground, then a black screen follows and a shot of him Walter fades in in the clinic.
The original version shows his drive in the ambulance. Walter wants to pretend as if nothing had happened. At the end, the physician's discovery already hints at his cancer.
Walter: "This is so embarrassing. I am fine. Honestly. It's just some bug going around. First my wife had it, then my son, and now me. It's just like a chest cold. Could be some low blood sugar as well. I didn't have the greatest breakfast this morning, honestly. Hey, listen, can you do me a favor? Can you just...drop me off at a corner somewhere?"
Doctor: "No. Sorry."
Walter: "It's just that I don't have the greatest insurance."
Doctor: "Take a couple of deep breaths for me. Is there anybody you want us to contact for you?"
Walter: "God, no."
Doctor: "Lean forward for me, would you?"
After a short feeling he asks: "Mr. White, are you a smoker?"
Walter is still confused: "No. Never. Why do you ask?"
Original version 63,9 sec longer
12:50 / 19:20-19:27
Skyler a bit earlier at the phone: "So my records show that I paid it, and I certainly don't feel that we owe any late... All right."
12:55 / 19:33-19:35
Another short comment from her: "Yeah, let me look into that."
14:45 / 21:29-21:52
Walter continues to light matches and then throw them into the pool (longshot longer, close-up earlier)
15:31 / 22:40-23:07
The shot in the car starts earlier, Hank and Steven talk longer.
Hank: "It's the last house on the right. See it? Not the two-story one. The one next to it. The kind of... I don't know, what do you call that? Green?"
Hank: "Sage? What, do you work at the fucking Pottery Barn?"
Steven: "Sage. That's the word for it. My fault the only word your dumb ass knows is green?"
Hank: "Cheese dick. I know that one. How 'bout that? Anyway, it's the sage one. See it?"
Audio Track Alteration
16:16-16:18 / 23:54-23:56
Hank says: "Watch this. This makes 'em shit." and hums a melody. The sentence in bold is missing in the international version and he starts humming earlier.
It seems improbable that this alteration was done because of censoring because other instances of "shit" could still be heard in this episode, even in the AMC version.
18:26 / 26:09-26:10
Jesse is staggering on the roog a bit longer.
18:36-18:39 / 26:21-26:24
Jesse's girlfriend is wearing a bra when she is standing at the window, in the original version she was naked (or blurred on AMC).
No difference in time
18:41 / 26:26
The same applies to the following shot when she can be seen closing the window in the background.
No difference in time
20:06 / 27:55
Walter insignificantly longer.
20:20 / 28:09-28:10
Jesse insignificantly longer.
20:32 / 28:22-28:23
20:42 / 28:33-28:34
Another irrelevant shortening.
21:28 / 29:22-29:23
22:03 / 29:59-30:00
22:10-22:13 / 30:06-31:41
The international version instantly shows Walter stealing things from school after his chat with Jesse. An exterior view of his car in front of the school serves as a transition here.
The original version shows an additional scene, in which Skyler talks to Marie. It is about Skyler's hobbies (the internet auctions and her trying to write short stories) and living together with Walter.
Marie: "What the hell is this?
Skyler: "Damned if I know. I described it as mosaic folk art."
Marie: "Somebody bought it?"
Skyler: "Yeah, some guy in Minneapolis. $14.00 plus shipping."
Marie: "Yes! At this rate, in 50 or 60 years, you'll be rich. So how goes the novel?"
Skyler: "It's not a novel, actually, which I have..."
Marie: "You're not writing a novel? You told me you were."
Skyler: "No. Short stories. I said that if eventually I have enough good ones that maybe I'll try and...publish another collection."
Marie: "Those really didn't sell. I just thought a novel would be easier to sell."
Skyler: "Yeah, well, maybe so."
Marie: "Ever want me to read anything, I could critique it for you."
Skyler: "No. I mean, I'm not at that stage where I... No."
Marie: "Open offer. So what's up with Walt lately?"
Skyler: "What do you mean? He's fine."
Marie: "He just seems, I don't know...quieter than usual."
Skyler: "Turning 50 is a big deal. I mean, I'm sure as hell not looking forward to 40. You're gonna be a complete basket case."
Marie: "So it's mid-life crisis."
Skyler: "No, he's just quiet."
Marie: "How's the sex?"
Skyler does not want to talk about it: "Marie, Jesus!"
Marie: "Guess that answers that..."

22:26 / 31:54-32:01
Walter sneaks out of the room in school.
22:28 / 32:03-32:04
The first shot outside is a tiny bit longer.
24:22-24:25 / 34:03-34:10

Original version 5,1 sec longer
Audio Track Alteration
34:24-34:26 / 44:53-44:55
When Jesse gets startled by dog and jumos back, the first word of his "Jesus Christ!" was muted.
37:10-37:12 / 47:46
The international version shows an exclusive shot of Krazy-8 going forward, then a shot of the obviously scared Walter, which originally was used 5 secs later.
The following shot of Krazy-9 starts a few insignificant frames earlier.
+ 2,2 sec
37:17 / 47:51-48:07
