This is a comparison between the cut UK BBFC 18 DVD released by Cornerstone Media and the uncut VHS released by Loyal Video
- 2 cuts
- Difference in time: 84.6 sec (= 1:25 min)
Several framecuts with a duration of less than 0.5 seconds were not regarded for this report.
In the UK, this very entertaining action movie with Bruce Li (the wrong one) is known under the title Deadly Strike and has a long history of censorship due to the usage of nunchucks, which were a thorn in the censors' flesh. Another scene, showing the murdering of a snake (whether fake or not is anyone's guess) had to be censored as well. When Cornerstone Media decided to release the movie on DVD, they used the exact same version.
To this day we only know of uncut VHS tapes of this movie. The German tape has an aspect ratio of 1.66:1 and thus is - in comparison to the original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 - zoomed (the German DVD has a better aspect ratio with 1.78:1, however, misses out on 25 minutes, thus making it a completely useless release). International audiences might want to check out the US VHS, however, this one has an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 that misses out on even more details of the movie and was zoomed in even further. So overall, you will have no choice but to wait for a good DVD Label to finally release the uncut version with an acceptable aspect ratio!
Time designations are given as follows:
BBFC 18 / Uncut
00:00-00:42 / 00:00-00:42
Interestingly enough, the credits show that the German VHS misses out on a few sequences.
Before Ling arrives at the police office, the UK Version already shows him walking through the city a little longer.
No difference in time.
23:01 / 23:02-23:05
The camera zooms to the tree where Li Wang's dagger sticks inside a twitching snake.
34:21 / 34:25-35:46
The bad guy takes out his nunchucks. The fight continues for a while and Ling actually struggles over the enemy's weapon.
However, when he is finally able to disarm his opponent, he uses the nunchucks against him. Being a master in nunchuck fighting, he heavily beats the bad guy up.
The UK Version continues with the hit at the neck which is actually the end of the fight.
Due to the mastertape, there is a different title card at the end of the movie.
