Egypt Hands Over Censorship to the Masses
Every Citizen Can Contribute to Internet-Censoring

What should be done when a state cannot afford a functioning censorship apparatus? Relying on the fact that there are enough citizens that don't like what others want to see. It's not even that far away from the recent EU proposal to include a "This is a terror site" button in every browser so everyone could flag unfavorable websites to the authorities. Now, the spy-light version of that should be implemented in Egypt. The people can report evil and undesirable websites (e.g. the one with the "Innocence of Muslims" video) in a form of the government's website and they immediately check whether it fits the criteria or not.

Of course, the form is protected against malintent. Next to the evil URL, a CAPTCH has to be completed before the report can be submitted. Seems to be a good mechanism to fight off the anti-censorship activists that try to keep the censors busy with the most gruesome videos and pictures from around the world. Let's sit and watch how long it will take until the authorities can't master the sheer mass of websites.
