After Earth - Most Likely No Extended Cut Later On

Director M. Night Shyamalan Sees No Reason for it

After Earth got a lot of press in the last few weeks and not the kind that the makers would have wanted. Apart from bad reviews and the accusation that Will Smith uses his star power to elevate his son Jaden into the Hollywood crowd, the suspicion that the film's big secret is a big tribute to the teachings of Scientology was widely discussed among media outlets and film fans. Will Smith has participated in creating the story and has been rumored to be linked to the sect for some years now.

And all that led to a big letdown at the box office for the $130 million project. Despite the need for every Dollar that the studio can get their hands on in order to refinance the film, an Extended Cut seems to be out of the question. Director M. Night Shyamalan made it clear that the theatrical version of the movie is the one he prefers, as he told Collider:

I don’t really like to do the extended cut.  This is the cut that I think worked best for the movie and the characters.  There are scenes that were right on the edge, but I always try to err on non-indulgence.  It’s something that I’m very careful about, that I’m just leaning too hard into something.  You’ll see it on the deleted scenes, because there’s a lot of really cool moments that just didn’t feel like they helped their brothers and sisters.
