The Tree of Life Could Get a Director's Cut

Terrence Malick Has Loads of Deleted Scenes Left

Even before Terrence Malick's movie The Tree of Life was released, different sources said that well-known actors shot scenes for the film but didn't appear in the final cut. Malick is one of those unpredictable filmmakers where one can never be sure. And obviously, there's a huge amount of unused material that didn't make it into the film as it is right now.

But what doesn't happen in cinemas could well become reality on DVD/BD. And even though the theatrical cut has been released for quite some time on these media, Malick might go back to the editing room as his cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki mentions. Especially scenes with the two child characters seem to be the point of interest:

I don’t even know the total [amount of footage that was shot], it was a huge amount of film, because he shot so many scenes. And I’m pretty sure he’s doing a director’s cut DVD of Tree Of Life, and that will have some of those scenes deleted [placed back] in. But for the theatrical release, he really thought that it was going to be too much, and he just couldn’t put it all in. (Source)

As always: take it with a grain of salt. Filmmakers like to promise longer cuts of their movies and not always does something come of it. With Malick it's even a little more uncertain.
