G.I. Joe: Retaliation Banned in Pakistan

Subplot Wasn't Liked That Much Apparently

Those who have already seen G.I. Joe: Retaliation know that the opening scene takes place in Pakistan. And the picture the film paints of the country is a chaotic one where anarchy reigns and where the Joes try to secure all nuclear weapons before terrorists can get to them.

Pakistan as a failed country. That certainly isn't a picture that the administration wants to see. Therefore, they banned the Hollywood movie, plain and simple. Even such fantasy action spectacles are not allowed to create such a negative impression of the country.

"I wonder how anyone thought this film would pass the censor, and this is a question one should ask the importer," says Iftikhar Durrani, advisor for Pakistani regulations.

The distributor did fear that outcome but tried it anyway and failed. Also, all trailers have to disappear from Pakistani cinemas. A similar fate had Zero Dark Thirty recently.
