Carrie - Reboot Will be Rated R

ChloŽ Grace Moretz in Stephen King Adaptation

Since the 70s, Stephen King's books serve as a basis for dozens of horror movies that are of more or less value. If one had to name the best of them, surely The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile come to mind easily. The first King adaptation was brought onto the big screen by Brian de Palma in 1976: Carrie. It featured Sissy Spacek in the leading role.

For 2013, Hollywood announced a reboot of Carrie, starring Chloë Grace Moretz. It will hit cinemas on March 15th. Next to the quality of the movie, fans also worry about the rating of such a new film. Especially since Hollywood often favors the lucrative PG-13 rating while the topic of the film would be served way better with an R rating.

In the case at hand, fans can be reassured. Producer Kevin Misher said in an interview at the New York Comic Con that Carrie will definitely have an R rating when it is released in cinemas.

We’re an R-rating. There was a discussion about the rating, but when you consider the sub-theme, you say you have to deal with an R rating.

We deal with the argument that it’s more profitable to do PG-13, I always think, Matrix did really well, it’s hard R. Paranormal Activity is R-rated and did very well for being an R-rated movie. A movie has to sit comfortably in the genre that it lives in, and if we tried to make this PG-13, everyone would cry bullshit. Does profitability factor into the discussion? Absolutely.

We’re aspiring toward the higher end of the King movies, [like] Stand by Me and Shawshank Redemption. Personally, I had Silence of the Lambs in my mind that was sort of the aspiration and goal in terms of creating a movie with emotional weight and still being scary.
