Windows 8 Store Without Adult Games

Restriction to Teenager-Friendly Content

Without a doubt, games heavily influence the restrictions to use media contents. Even when you can normally buy them in the store, online activation or a linkage to Steam and co. enables the distributors to control precisely who can use them to what extent. The cases, in which this totally inhibits the full usage of legally purchased titles are still rare, albeit they happened already (e.g. the English version of Call of Duty: Black Ops couldn't be activated by German players because of the Swastikas).

This is taken another step further by the App stores, especially the one from Apple. Here, the borders are much more narrowed down and sometimes, even the American standards are used in European countries, where they don't really fit in the context (the omitting of naked breasts or cuss words).

With Windows 8, Microsoft now joins this market and that not only on mobile devices but also on desktop computers with these mechanisms directly integrated in the main system. This is motivated by the big hopes that this restrictive system will be the future for the home area.

However, the App store has now strict guidelines regarding which contents may be offered and which don't. For example, games with a PEGI 18 classification are not permitted.

5.1 Your app must not contain adult content, and metadata must be appropriate for everyone

Apps with a rating over PEGI 16, ESRB MATURE, or that contain content that would warrant such a rating, are not allowed. Metadata and other content you submit to accompany your app may contain only content that would merit a rating of PEGI 12, ESRB EVERYONE, or Windows Store 12+, or lower. (Quelle)

As long as App stores act more like kindergarten than a reasonable and customer-friendly platform, you can be sure that the old-school internet, where you have to click 2-3 times to get through a software installation instead of one, will remain relevant. Say "thank you", kids.
