Warriors of the Rainbow released in two versions
It's not unusual that Asian films, especially those with historic plots, are sometimes heavily cut for the international market in order to adjust it to the viewing patterns of the American and European public that oftentimes doesn't want to be bothered with "pointless plots".
Warriors of the Rainbow was co-produced by John Woo and had a budget of approx. 25 million Dollars. Its plot revolves around ancient tribes that have to confront Japanese occupants. It faced the same fate of heavy cutting since the original runtime was 4.5 hours. In its country of origin, Taiwan, it was released in two parts for the theatrical run. The international market received a version that was considerably shorter, different sources range between 154 and 185 minutes.
Fortunately, distributor Well Go will release both versions separately on DVD and Blu-ray in the US. The release date is August 7th, 2012.
