UK adopts PEGI classifications for video games

BBFC will no longer rate games

It took them 3 years but now a decision has been made: in the future, the BBFC will not be responsible for the classification of video games any more. Instead, the UK adopts the PEGI system.

The Video Standards Council (VSC) will apply the PEGI guidelines and also check whether retailers tolerate the binding age restrictions. If they don't and the violation is serious, they could face jail time for the first time ever.

Creative Industries Minister Ed Vaizey: "It will give parents greater confidence that their children can only get suitable games while we are creating a simpler system for industry having their games age-rated."

Jo Twist, CEO of games industry trade body UKIE: "We are also in the planning stages of a major awareness campaign to help the public understand the system and other aspects of responsible gaming as soon as PEGI become law in the UK."
