Neighborhood Watch - Poster and trailer pulled

Marketing campaign reacts on Florida shooting

Even before the marketing campaign for the comedy Neighborhood Watch starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill has really taken off, the death of Trayvon Martin, who was shot by a neighborhood watch captain, produced some bad publicity for the film. The shooting of Martin was covered by the press and shortly after that, some Florida citizens started to feel offended by the poster and first teaser trailer for the film.

Specifically, they mentioned the traffic sign on the poster which is perforated by gunshots and a gesture by Jonah Hill's character symbolizing the usage of a handgun (as depicted below).

Distributor 20th Century Fox reacted immediately and issued a statement clarifying that the film's content has nothing to do with the real life event:

We are very sensitive to the Trayvon Martin case, but our film is a broad alien-invasion comedy and bears absolutely no relation to the tragic events in Florida. The movie, which is not

scheduled for release for several months, was made and these initial marketing materials were released before this incident ever came to light. The teaser materials were part of an early phase of our marketing and were never planned for long-term use. Above all else, our thoughts go out to the families touched by this terrible event.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Fox also announced to pull the trailer and replace the teaser poster in Florida. It remains to be seen if this event has any long-term effect on the film's perception since its release lies several months in the future.

Neighborhood Watch is scheduled for release on July 27t

h, 2012 in the US and on August 29th, 2012 in UK.
